The Puppy

Bilbao, para mí, significa la arquitectura, el arte y la comida. Esta es la segunda vez que visito la ciudad vasca,  y llueve ahora como llovió la primera vez.

Bilbao, for me, means architecture, art and food. This is the second time I have been here, and it is raining now, just as it rained the first time I was here, last Easter. It rains a lot in Bilbao.

Es curioso, parece que sólo paso tiempo este año en lugares en España con dos lenguas: gallego y castellano en Galicia, bable y castellano en Asturias y euskera y castellano aquí en Bilbao. Y mañana voy a Cataluña. Aquí es aún más obvio que en las otras regiones. Todos las calles tienen nombres en las dos lenguas y supongo que es más evidente en el país vasco porque los dos idiomas no tienen nada que ver, el uno con el otro – son totalmente diferentes. El euskera tiene muchas “k”s y “x”s y muchas palabras terminadas en “gui”, “u” y “oa”. Es fácil distinguirlo del castellano, y si hablas el español, eso no te ayuda nada a entender el euskera, que no es el caso con el gallego o el catalán.

It is curious, it seems that I am only visiting places in Spain on this trip that have two languages: Galician and Spanish in Galicia, Bable and Spanish in Asturias, Basque and Spanish here in Bilbao. And tomorrow I go to Catalunya. Here, it is even more obvious than in other regions. Every street has the name in the two languages and it is more blatant here as the two languages – Basque and Spanish – have literally nothing in common. Famously, Basque has no known linguistic relative, and is not connected to any other European language. Basque has a lot of unusual letter combinations, a lot of “K”s and “X”s, and many words ending in “gui”, “u” and “oa”. It is easy to distinguish it from Spanish and if you speak Spanish it doesn’t help you in any way to understand Basque – which is not the case with Galician or Catalan.

Dije que la ciudad para mí significa arquitectura, arte y comida. La arquitectura es obvia – el museo Guggenheim es uno de los edificios más notables del mundo, una estructura realmente deslumbrante que cambia totalmente de aspecto si te mueves diez metros a la izquierda o a la derecha. Es algo verdaderamente único.

I said that Bilbao to me means architecture, art and food. The architecture here is obviously important – the Guggenheim museum is one of the most remarkable buildings in the world and is already a symbol of the city, a truly astonishing structure that looks quite different if you move ten metres to the left or the right and look at it from a different angle.  It is something unique.

También hay la Torre Iberdrola, un enorme edificio bastante fálico que domina la parte del norte del centro de la ciudad. Parece una nave espacial contundente, lista para despegar para las estrellas.

There is also the Iberdrola Tower, an enormous, phallic building that dominates the northern part of the city centre. It looks like a giant spaceship, about to take off for the stars.

Además, dando el papel central que tiene el río en Bilbao, los puentes forman un paisaje variado e impresionante en el centro de la ciudad. Hay uno de Calatrava, otros grandes  y otros sólo para peatones. Con el Guggenheim y la Torre, los puentes son los hitos centrales en el paisaje variado de la ciudad.

Moreover, given the centrality of the river to Bilbao, the bridges in the city form an impressive, varied landscape there. There is one by Calatrava, others that are large and imposing and one smaller one that is just for pedestrians. Along with the Guggenheim and the Tower, the bridges are the central landmarks in Bilbao’s varied cityscape.

La importancia del arte, también, no es de extrañar. El Guggenheim no es sólo un edificio asombroso, también tiene una colección de arte que es igual a cualquier museo del mundo. No he ido ahí todavía. En cambio, hoy fui al Museo de Bellas Artes, que está a la vuelta de la esquina del Guggenheim. En mi opinión, hay obras tan significativas como en el museo más famoso: hay cuadros de Velásquez, Picasso, Van Gogh, Murillo, Barceló, cosas realmente impresionantes.

The prominence of art is also not surprising. The Guggenheim is not just an extraordinary building, it houses an art collection that is the rival of any in the world. I haven’t been there yet, though I was there last year. Instead, today I went to the Museum of Fine Art, which is just around the corner from the Guggenheim. In my opinion there are artworks here that are the equal of the more famous gallery down the road: works by Velasquez, Van Gogh, Picasso, Murillo, Barceló. Some genuinely impressive stuff in room after room after room.

La comida es importante en toda España, pero en el País Vasco es una obsesión. Puedes ir a cualquier restaurante en el casco viejo de Bilbao y tienes la oportunidad de comer algo que nunca has comida antes, algo exquisito y digno de un restaurante caro en Irlanda. Ayer comí un marmitako de atún y un guisado de cordero y setas en un restaurante en el centro. No sabía muy bien que era un “mamatako”, pero me apetecía probar algo de atún, y supuse que era un plato vasco. Cuando el plato llegó, era un tipo de guisado de atún con patatas cocidas y pimientos. Delicioso. El menú en inglés está aquí.

Food is important everywhere in Spain, but in the Basque country it is bordering on an obsession. You can go to any restaurant in the old centre of Bilbao and have the chance to try things you have never eaten before, prepared in ways you have never imagined, things in normal Basque restaurants that you would only find in an expensive Irish restaurant. Yesterday I had a marmitako of tuna and a lamb casserole with peppers and mushrooms in a restaurant in the centre. I didn’t really know what a “marmitako” was, but I felt like some tuna and I assumed that it was a Basque dish. When the food arrived, I found that it was a type of tuna stew with peppers and potatoes. Delicious. The menu in English is here (along with the usual strange translation errors – no idea what “obtaining of boletus” is!

La verdad es que es fácil encontrar las cosas más creativas y exquisitas en un restaurante vasco, por un precio bastante bajo. Cosas que no se ven fácilmente en otras partes de España. Otras cosas en ese menú de ayer eran milhojas de carne de cerdo con foie y cebollas caramelizadas y merluza rellena de cangrejo con salsa de cangrejo: todos platos disponibles en otras partes, pero generalmente no en un sitio de menú por €13.

The truth is that it is easy to find the most exquisite and creative food on the menus of restaurants in the Basque country, for a very reasonable price, things that you would have difficulty finding in other parts of Spain. Other things on the menu there yesterday were "Millefeuille of Pork fillet with foie and caramelized onions" and "hake stuffed with crab in a crab sauce." You might find these in other areas, but generally not in a lunch menu that offers you two courses, bread, dessert and a drink for less than €13.
