GUIMARÃES - CIDADE BERÇO (GUIMARÃES - THE BIRTH OF PORTUGAL)

Fui a Guimarães ontem. Esta cidade no norte de Portugal é conhecida como o berço do país. A Batalha de São Mamede teve lugar aqui, em 1128, que conduziu à fundação de Portugal como país. A cidade é Património Mundial da Humanidade, devido, em parte, à preservação do centro histórico. Fui lá de comboio. Paguei dois euros por um bilhete de ida e volta – um preço tão surpreendente que, quando eu estava a comprá-lo na estação, tive que pedir à empregada que repetisse o valor duas vezes para ter certeza de quanto tinha que pagar. Isso foi para uma viagem de uma hora e 60 quilómetros, ida e volta.

I went to Guimarães yesterday. This city in the north of Portugal is known as "the cradle of the country". The Battle of São Mamede took place here in 1128, which led directly to the formation of Portugal as an independent country. The city is a World Heritage site due, mainly to the way that the historic centre has been preserved. I went there by train. I paid two euros for a return ticket - a price that was so tiny that I had to ask the girl in the ticket office to repeat the number twice, just to be sure I had understood correctly how much I had to pay. This is for a journey of an hour and 60 kilometres, there and back.

A cidade em si é bonita, mas não é nada do outro mundo. Se visitas muitas cidades portuguesas e espanholas, depois de algum tempo vais ver que têm muito em comum, e que os centros históricos dessas cidades são semelhantes: Cádiz, Sevilha, Évora, Lisboa, Barcelona, Porto, Santiago. Guimarães também segue o padrão – ruas estreitas, monumentos em cada esquina, igrejas ornamentadas, ruas de pedras. Não é que não sejam interessantes, é que há tanta história e tantas cidades bem conservadas nesta parte do mundo, que já não é novidade. Visitei o Paço dos Duques de Bragança, que fica no outro lado da cidade da estação ferroviária. Para mim foi a coisa mais interessante de Guimarães, embora não tivesse a certeza, no inicio, se queria entrar ou não, vendo que já vi tantos palácios e castelos nas minhas estadias em Portugal e Espanha. No final, entrei. Havia as coisas normais de um palácio do século quinze, a sala de banquete, os quartos, uma capela; tudo interessante em si, bem conservado, dando uma ideia de como era viver em um palácio ducal no meio de um tempo bem mais primitivo que agora.

The city is pretty enough, but nothing amazing. If you visit enough Iberian cities, after a while you begin to see that they have a lot in common. Cadiz, Seville, Evora, Lisbon, Barcelona, Porto, Santiago; the historic centres of these cities have a lot of similarities - narrow streets, monuments on each corner, ornate churches, cobbled streets. It is not that they are not still fascinating and beautiful, it is just that there is so much history here, and so many well conserved cities in this part of the world, that it almost becomes commonplace after a while. I visited the Palace of the Dukes of Bragança, which is on a hill at the opposite side of the city from the train station. This was the most interesting aspect of the city, though I wasn't actually going to go in initially, seeing as I have seen so many castles and palaces and other old buildings in my time in Spain and Portugal. In the end, I went in. There were the normal elements of a palace of its time there; banqueting hall, bedrooms, a chapel, all interesting in itself, well kept. It all served to give an idea of what it was like to live in a palace like this in that, more primitive time.

Porém, dois aspectos me interessaram mais. O primeiro foi os tetos, muito ornamentados, alguns com desenhos ou imagens, a maioria feitos de madeira com detalhes intricados. Os tetos não tinham só um fim utilitário, eram também objetos decorativos, algo para ser admirado.

However, there were two aspects of the place that interested me most. The first was the ceilings, which were very ornate, some with drawings or paintings on them, most of them wooden with intricate details. The ceilings did not only have a practical use in the palace, they were also decorative objects, to be looked at and admired.

O segundo aspecto fascinante do palácio eram as camas. Havia duas na parte que eu vi, ambas muito arrumadas e perfeitas. Também eram minúsculas; se calhar de um metro e trinta centímetros. Eu pensava logo que eram de crianças, mas parece que não era bem assim.  Havia um grupo de brasileiros lá com uma guia portuguesa, explicando os vários elementos do palácio. A guia explicou que as camas eram de adultos, e eram tão pequenas por duas razões. Primeiro, as pessoas eram bem mais baixas naquela época. Segundo, eles associavam estar esticado  numa cama com a ideia da morte, ou seja, os mortos eram deitados nessa posição, de costas, esticados. As pessoas daquela época preferiam dormir encolhidas na cama para que não fossem obrigadas a pensar nos mortos no caixão, e por isso não precisavam de camas tão grandes.

The second fascinating aspect of the palace was the beds. There were two in the part that I saw, both of them nicely arranged and tidy. They were also tiny; maybe four feet long (one metre, thirty), maybe less. I immediately assumed that they were children's beds, but it turns out that that was not quite correct. There was a group of Brazilians there with a Portuguese guide explaining the various parts of the palace to them. I eavesdropped on her chat. The guide explained that the beds were adult beds, and were so small for two reasons. Firstly, people were much shorter in those days. Secondly, they associated lying down, stretched out, with death; because dead people were laid out like that in their coffins, people of that time saw the connection between that position and death. So they tended to sleep curled up in bed so they wouldn't be reminded of corpses laid out for their funerals.

Em geral, gostei bastante de Guimarães. É uma cidade pequena no interior do país, fácil de ver em um dia, bom para os que gostam de história. Fica só a uma hora do Porto. Passei só duas horas lá e vi bastante nesse tempo.

In general, I liked Guimarães a lot. It is a small city in the interior, easy to see in one day, good for those who like history. And only an hour from Porto. I was only there for two hours and saw quite a lot.
