LISBOA 3 - AZULEJOS E UMA CAPA DE LIVRO (TILES AND A BOOK COVER)

Gostei muito das cores e do design da imagem, e encaixava-se bem na capa do livro. É formada por azulejos e descobri que o original fica no Museu Nacional do Azulejo em Lisboa. Tive a oportunidade de ir lá ontem, no meu último dia em Lisboa. Fui só para ver os azulejos originais da imagem que está na minha capa, mas acabei por ver o museu todo, que está ligado a uma igreja impressionante – A Igreja Madre de Deus. Tive dificuldades em localizar o que procurava. Entretanto, fui vendo os exemplos fascinantes de esta arte tão portuguesa dos últimos quinhentos anos. Há várias cenas representadas nos painéis – um painel é um  conjunto de azulejos individuais que forma uma imagem maior. Há cenas curiosas como casamentos de animais, há imagens de Lisboa, antes e depois do terremoto, há azulejos com cenas religiosas, y retratos de pessoas. É um museu pequeno mas giro.

I really liked the colours and the design of the image, and it fitted well on the cover of the book. It is composed of azulejos, those painted tiles that the Portuguese specialize in. I found out that the original is in the National Museum of the Azulejo in Lisbon. I had the opportunity of going to the museum yesterday, on my last day in Lisbon. I only went to see the original tiles that form the image, but I ended up looking around the museum itself, which is joined on to a tiny but impressive church - the church of Madre de Deus. I had difficulties in finding what I was looking for. Meanwhile, I had a look around some of the fascinating examples of this very typical Portuguese art form, which has been around for at least 500 years. The collections of tiles that form a larger image are called "painels", or panels, and there are some curious ones in the museum; lots with animals, including one with monkeys getting married, some with images of Lisbon, both before and after the earthquake, which destroyed the city in 1755, and of course lots of portraits of people and religious images. It is a small but interesting museum.

A igreja também é impressionante. Não é grande mas está totalmente cheia de imagens, desenhos e representações visuais de várias cenas religiosas. Se entrares aí, vais ver que todas as superfícies - paredes e teto - são cobertas por quadros ou azulejos. Para um espaço tão estreito, a enorme quantidade de arte e representações visuais é esmagadora.

The church too is impressive. It is not large but it is totally full of images, paintings, altarpieces and designs, obviously representing one religious scene or another. Every surface in the church, except the floor, is covered by tiles or paintings. For such a narrow, tiny space, the enormous quantity of art, paintings and azulejos there is overwhelming.

Finalmente topei com o painel que procurava. Ficava no segundo piso. Inicialmente, não percebi exatamente o que estava a ver; tinha o mesmo estilo da imagem da capa, mas não era exatamente aquela. Olhei fixamente para o painel durante alguns minutos, e de repente descobri a resposta: a capa do meu livro só contém uma parte minúscula do painel.

I finally came across the panel that I had been searching for. It is on the second floor of the building. At first, I couldn't really grasp exactly what I was seeing: it had the same style as the image that I was looking for, but it wasn't exactly right. I stared at the tiles for a few minutes, and it eventually came to me; the image on the cover of my book only contains a tiny portion of the larger panel.

De fato, é uma secção quadrada do lado esquerdo do painel, se calhar uma déxima sexta parte do total.

In fact, it is a square section from the left side of the panel, maybe one sixteenth of the whole.

É um painel mais contemporâneo, foi feito em 1937 para a Expo de Paris de aquele ano. O artista é Paolo Ferreira, e chama-se, em françês, Lisbonne aux mille couleurs.  Fiquei bastante contente, e um pouco emocionado, depois de ter encontrado o que eu procurava, essa imagem que, imagino, atraiu alguma atenção para o meu livro e provalemente ajudou a vender alguns exemplares. Faz mais de um ano que essa imagem tem um papel importante na minha vida, e ver o original da foto que usei na capa ao vivo e em cores foi um verdadeiro prazer.

It is a more contemporary panel that most of the rest that are there: it was done for the Paris Expo of 1937. The artist is Paolo Ferreira, and the piece as a whole is called, in French, Lisbonne aux mille couleurs. I was pleased, and a little emotional, to discover what I was looking for. It is an image that has assumed quite an importance for me in the last year or so. It looks striking, and I have no doubt that the cover alone has attracted some attention for my book and has probably sold a few copies. It was a pleasure to stand there and see the source of this image that has been so central to my life in the last fourteen months.
