PORTO 2 - A LIVRARIA MAIS BONITA DO MUNDO (THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BOOKSHOP IN THE WORLD)

Finalmente tive a oportunidade de visitar a Livraria Lello. Digo “finalmente” porque fui lá várias vezes e sempre havia uma fila enorme para entrar. É o único lugar no Porto onde vi uma massa de turistas como se pode ver em Lisboa em todos os sítios. A razão pela fila é simples: foi nomeada “A livraria mais bonita do mundo” por um website americano, e não é sem razão. Eu já tinha visto as fotos, nas quais a livraria parece um lugar do outro mundo, com uma escadaria de madeira muito trabalhada e elaborada, mais madeira e desenhos nas paredes, colunas e corrimões bonitos e um vitral, também no teto, tudo de vidro, com uma insígnia “Decus in Labore” (Dignidade no trabalho).

I finally had the chance to visit the Lello bookshop in Porto. I say "finally" because I went there a number of times and there was always an enormous queue just to get in. It is the only place in Porto where I saw such a mass of tourists comparable to what you see everywhere in Lisbon.  The reason for this is simple; it was named "the most beautiful bookshop in the world" by an American books website, and not for nothing. I had seen the photos before going in, though they were taken with no customers in the place. It looks like somewhere from a different world, with a very ornate, elaborate wooden staircase, more wood and designs on the walls, columns and handrails also made from carved wood and a stained glass ceiling with the insignia "Decus in Labore" (Dignity in Work) on it.

É a primeira livraria que visitei onde se tem que pagar para entrar. Um bilhete custa quatro euros, mas isso dá-te um desconto se queres comprar um livro. É uma maneira genial de controlar o número de turistas que vão aí, e também de vender mais livros. Não comprei nada, mas não me importou pagar para entrar. O lugar é giro.

It is the first bookshop I have ever been in where you have to pay to get in. A ticket costs four euros but if you want to buy a book, you can discount the price of admission from the book price. This is an ingenious way of controlling the number of visitors, and also of selling more books. I didn't buy anything but I didn't mind paying to go in as the place is unique.

Porém, não é muito grande. Nas fotos, parece muito maior. Com a quantidade de pessoas que entram lá, pode ser difícil às vezes ir de um lado para o outro, e algumas vezes, quando eu lá estava, tinha que esperar para subir ou descer as escadas. A maioria dos livros são em português, mas há uma secção em inglês, espanhol e francês.

However, it is not very big. In the photos, it seems much bigger (again, taken without any customers). With a full shop, and the quantity of tourists there just to stare at the architecture, it can be difficult at times to move around the shop. At times, when I was there, I often had to wait or queue just to go up or down the stairs.  Most of the books are in Portuguese, but there are sections with books in English, French and Spanish.

Diz-se que a J.K. Rowling foi inspirada pela livraria Lello a escrever os livros de Harry Potter. Ela vivia em Portugal e visitou o lugar, e por isso é possível. Não sei se é verdade, mas de certeza essa história contribuiu para aumentar o número de turistas que lá estavam. Vale a pena visitar, mas se alguém realmente quer comprar um livro, eu iria a outro sítio.

It is said that J.K. Rowling was inspired by the Lello bookshop to write her Harry Potter books. She lived in Portugal for a while and visited the place, so it is possible. I am not sure if this is strictly true, but this myth/legend has certainly contributed to the massive number of people going through the shop every day.  It is worth visiting, but if you really want to buy a book, I would go to another bookshop.
