BARCELONA: GAUDÍ, GAUDÍ Y GAUDÍ

El arquitecto, Antoni Gaudí, domina el paisaje turístico aquí en Barcelona, como ninguna otra figura. Su obra prima, La Sagrada Familia, es uno de los edificios más importantes y más extraordinarios del mundo, un símbolo de Barcelona y Patrimonio de la Humanidad.

The architect, Antoní Gaudí, dominates the tourist landscape of Barcelona like no other figure. His great work, La Sagrada Familia, is one of the most remarkable and important buildings in the world, a symbol of the city and a World Heritage site.

El Parc Güell

Como turistas, el problema es que, con Internet, ya hemos visto todos estos lugares, de todas las perspectivas imaginables. Hay tantas fotos en línea ahora y tantos blogs y artículos y guías, que es imposible hoy en día que llegas a una ciudad como Barcelona y que te sorprenda. La primera obra de Gaudí que vi era el Parc Güell. Para llegar ahí se puede ir andando de Vallcarca, la estación de metro más cercana, pero el camino es cuesta arriba y no es fácil. El parque está en una de las colinas de la ciudad, que le ofrece a un turista unas vistas impresionantes. La otra manera de llegar ahí son los autobuses 92 y 24.

As tourists, the problem is that, with the internet, we have already seen all of these places, from every angle imaginable. There are so many photos on line, so many blogs, articles and guides that it is impossible these days to come to a city like Barcelona and be surprised. The first work of Gaudí that I saw was the Parc Güell. You can go there from the nearest metro station, which is Vallcarca, but it is all uphill from there and a bit of a steep climb, if you can find your way. The park is on one of the hills of the city and offers pretty good views over Barcelona from the top. The other way to get there is on buses numbers 24 and 92.

Como he dicho, es casi imposible que un lugar hoy en día te sorprenda, y el Parc Güell para mí fue una decepción. La verdad es que es mucho más pequeño que esperaba. Pasé unos 30 minutos ahí, y eso incluye 10 minutos sentándome en los bancos en la parte alta del parque, mirando la vista y la gente. Tiene dos edificios guapos, unos dos o tres lugares interesantes, y ya está. Podrías ver todo en 15 minutos, sin problemas. No es que no sea bonito, pero es pequeño y yo esperaba más.

As I have said already, it is almost impossible to the surprised by a place, in these days of instant internet and millions of photos online of every imaginable place. Parc Güell, for me, was a bit of a letdown. For one thing, it is much smaller than I had expected. I spent 30 minutes there, and that includes 10 minutes sitting on one of the benches at the top of the park, looking at the view. It has two cute buildings, and one or two other interesting places, and that’s it. You could see everything in 15 minutes, no problem. It is not that it is not beautiful, but it is small, and I was expecting more.

Fue así en la Sagrada Familia también. Un lugar donde sólo hay turistas. El edificio en sí es impresionante, precioso, muy extraño, como una iglesia diseñada por extraterrestres. Pero también se puede ver todo en 15 minutos y cuesta casi €20 para entrar (€15 de entrada + €4.50 coste de reserva por internet). Lo mejor del interior son las vidrieras. Cuando la luz del sol brilla y pasa por el vidrio colorado, crea efectos mágicos en el interior. Fue imposible capturar los colores con la camera de mi móvil, pero hay aquí una representación de la escena.

It was like that in the Sagrada Familia as well: a place where there are only tourists. The building in itself is impressive: beautiful, strange, like a church designed by aliens. But here too, you can see everything in 15 minutes – the inside is basically just one enormous space. It costs almost €20 to go in (€15 entry fee and €4.50 admin fee for internet tickets). The best part of the interior are the stained glass windows. When the sunlight enters through the coloured glass, it creates magical effects inside. It was impossible to capture the multi-coloured effects with the camera on my phone, but here is an idea of the scene inside the church.

Gaudí también diseñaba casas y pisos, y hay aquí uno de esos edificios, cerca de las Ramblas de Catalunya, la Casa Mirà. No vi el interior, pero el exterior es, como la Sagrada Familia, como algo de otro planeta, ondulado y grande, como un castillo.

Gaudí also designed houses and apartment buildings, and this is one of them, the Casa Mirà, near the Ramblas of Catalunya. I didn’t see the inside, but the outside is, like the Sagrada Familia, like something from another planet, all wavy lines and large and imposing, like a castle.

Barcelona está llena de extranjeros, aún más que Lisboa. Pero al contrario de la capital portuguesa, me parece que muchos extranjeros viven aquí. Ya he estado en dos taxis con conductores extranjeros, un francés y un señor del este de Europa – cosa que no me ha ocurrido en ninguna otra ciudad en Portugal o España. Mirando en Wikipedia, parece que mis impresiones son correctas. Dice que casi 23% de la población de la ciudad es extranjera, que es mucho. No es de extrañar: es una ciudad obviamente rica, con tiendas llenas de productos caros, centros de estética para perros, gente con dinero, todo bien conservado. Una de las ciudades más importantes del mundo. Mismo si estás un poco agotado con el turismo – como yo – es imposible que Barcelona no te guste, que no te impresione.

Barcelona is full of foreigners, even more than Lisbon, but in contrast to the Portuguese capital, it seems that a lot of them actually live here. I have already been in two taxis driven by foreigners: one French guy and a man from Eastern Europe somewhere, to judge by their accents – something that hasn’t happened to me in any other city in Spain or Portugal. Looking on Wikipedia, it seems that my impressions are correct. It says that almost 23% of the population of Barcelona are foreign born, which is a lot. It is no wonder; it is an obviously affluent city, with neat shops full of expensive products, dog-grooming centres, people who are clearly wealthy. Everything is well kept, the physical spaces and buildings are grand and imposing and speak of centuries of power, wealth and influence. Even if I am a little worn out by all of the tourism, it is impossible not to be charmed by Barcelona, not to be impressed by it.
